Bananas are among the most consumed and beloved fruits worldwide. However, extending the post-harvest lifespan of bananas and preserving their freshness quality is only possible through proper storage methods. At Korkmaz Panel, we offer essential tips and strategies for banana storage.
Rapid post-harvest cooling of bananas and maintaining suitable storage temperatures are critical for extending freshness. Bananas can be stored at temperatures between 12-15 degrees Celsius for 7-10 days. However, using controlled atmosphere storage systems, this period can be extended to 3-4 weeks. These systems create an environment with 4-5% oxygen and 5% CO2, slowing down the ripening process and increasing freshness.
Bananas have a higher respiration rate compared to other fruits since they are climacteric. Therefore, these characteristics should be taken into account when calculating storage temperature and cooling capacity. Ensuring optimal storage conditions is a fundamental step in preserving the freshness and quality of bananas.
Thin polyethylene bags can be used to extend the shelf life of bananas. These bags help protect the fruits from external influences and prolong the storage duration. However, it is crucial to allow air circulation within these bags to enable the bananas to breathe; otherwise, the risk of spoilage increases.
Another important point to consider during banana storage is the ripeness of the bananas. Once ripe, bananas may develop various dark gray spots along with changes in aroma and flavor. Therefore, it is essential to store bananas after they reach the optimal ripeness level.
At Korkmaz Panel, we specialize in banana storage processes and work hard to provide our customers with the best quality. For more information on banana and other fruit storage, please contact us.
